CYRIL NEVILLE ON MOUNTAIN STAGE
Oops! It looks like we missed reporting a pretty significant Neville radio broadcast back in September! Luckily, the show has been archived on-line so that all can still hear it!
Cyril's performance for the syndicated "Live at Mountain Stage" radio program was aired in late September and early October.
Go HERE to listen to the performance.
November 2009
According to Offbeat Magazine's web site, "This year’s Saints have prompted a number of artists to record their own Saints song, so Carlo Nuccio – who wrote and recorded the original “Who Dat” more than 25 years ago – has returned with “Glory Bound,” an update of the song. The song features the return of Aaron Neville, who sang the song the first time around, and Theresa Andersson, along with Ivan Neville, Jon Cleary, Matt Perrine, Barry Foulon, Shamarr Allen, Joe Cabral, Ben Schenck, Jimi Burtchaell, Alex McMurray, Paul Sanchez, Derrick Freeman and Rob Schafer. The song will be available soon on iTunes..."
AARON'S NEW HOLIDAY SINGLE "PLEASE DON'T FORGET"
This message was posted on Aaron's MySpace and Facebook pages...
Aaron Neville, The Weather Channel® (TWC), and social services organization The Salvation Army, are pleased to announce the release of “Holiday Party,” a holiday music compilation album. The CD features the single “Please Don’t Forget” by Aaron Neville, as well as holiday classics “White Christmas” and “Go Tell It On The Mountain” from his album “Christmas Prayer.” A portion of the proceeds from the single and the CD, both available by download from [the Weather Channel's web site], will be donated to The Salvation Army’s Annual Red Kettle Christmas Campaign. You can also buy a physical copy of "Holiday Party" at TWC store or at major retailers such as Wal-Mart. Aaron will be debuting "Please Don't Forget" Friday, Nov. 20 on Wake Up with Al, The Weather Channel morning show hosted by Al Roker and Stephanie Abrams.
“One of the sounds I love about the holiday season is the ‘ring ring’ of Salvation Army bells at Red Kettles. It brings hope, happiness and awareness to so many around the U.S. It's such an honor to partner with the Salvation Army and The Weather Channel on this holiday collection and new song. ‘Please Don't Forget’ is just a reminder to reach out a hand to our brothers and sisters who may need a little extra help this holiday season and every season for generations to come.”
- Aaron Neville..
Ed. note... The single (or the entire album) can also be downloaded from Amazon.com's mp3 store.
We've recently been seeing reports about a new DVD titled "Getting Funkier All The Time" (by Ivan Neville's New Orleans All-Stars.) The disc features a performance from 2004 by Ivan, Ian, Richard Cousins, Peter Haas and Hendrix on a German TV show called Rockpalast. A video of this show has been traded among collectors for some time and it IS a terrific show. However, we have not seen this new DVD and (even though it is available from several legitimate retailers) our gut feeling is that it is not an authorized release!
We will let you know as we learn more about whether or not it is an approved release!
October 2009
Sorry for the dearth of Neville news in recent months. Unfortunately, there haven't been very many new Neville-related recordings so far this year (but we - like so many of you - have our fingers crossed that more will be released by year's end!!!)
In recent months, Cyril has contributed to the title track on Mike Zito's "Pearl River" LP.
Last year, Charles appeared on the title track of Roger Salloom's "La Te Da" CD. We have just received information from Donald Taylor of Eastern Entertainment that Charles has also contributed to three songs on Salloom's brand new release, "Last Call." (The three songs to which he contributed are: "Nello," "If This Is It I'm Ready" and "When You Can't Do Anything.") More info (and audio samples of some of the songs) can be found at Mr Salloom's MySpace page HERE.
Check out Charles Neville on Roger Salloom's latest CD "Last Call."
According to Mr. Taylor, "Charles will be playing live with Roger on November 7th, at Black-Eyed Sally's in Hartford, CT." (You can find additional info about that show at the venue's website by clicking HERE.)
The Meters' "Live at Rozy's" disc (which we announced back in July) is finally hitting the streets.
Our copy finally arrived yesterday and the disc appears to be (as many sources are claiming) a Japanese release. The traditional obi strip found on Japanese releases is there. However, the selling prices we've found on the disc are VERY low compared to those of most other Japanese CDs.
The disc is packaged in a thick, cardboard mini-LP sleeve with a plastic sleeve inside to protect the disc from scratches. The sleeve (both front and back) duplicates the artwork on the original vinyl pressing of this legendary bootleg. The artwork on the disc itself is a facsimile of the labels on the original LP as well.
The manufacturer of the disc is listed as REG Associates, the same folks who were responsible for the original LPs and the Reg-001 catalog number was also carried over from the vinyl version to this CD release.
The sound quality of the disc is nice, but far from being of audiophile quality. (The "Live on the Queen Mary" disc from Rhino sounded much better.) To our ears, the sound quality is not an improvement over that on the original LP. The second song fades out, just like it did on the original LP, leaving us wondering if this disc was created, using an original vinyl copy as the source.
Our verdict... There are better sounding Meters shows available in collector's circles, but this recording has been praised by the Meters themselves as being one of the best representations of their live shows at the time. The vinyl version is very hard to find and usually sells for well over $100 (if you can find a copy.) This CD, which sells for around $15 is a great way to own a copy of this legendary bootleg at a reasonable price. Just don't expect to be wowed by the sound quality and it's very likely that you'll find yourself enjoying the disc immensely.
DISCLAIMER: Although this bootleg has been praised by the Meters themselves, we sincerely doubt that this CD is authorized and that it generates any royalties for the band. If we learn otherwise, we'll let you know, but you might want to take this into consideration when deciding whether or not to purchase a copy.

AARON NEVILLE'S GOSPEL SOUL AT JAZZFESTLIVE.COM
Munck Music / www.jazzfestlive.com's web site was down for a couple days; and, when it came back online, we discovered that the "Aaron Neville's Gospel Soul" show from the Fest is now available for purchase.
So far, the only available Neville shows are the Dumpstaphunk set and this one.
At the moment, only CDs are available for purchase. As it has been for the past several years, it takes a couple of weeks before downloads are available.
Click HERE for the Jazzfestlive.com site.
PARTIAL REUNION OF THE SOUL MACHINE
Back in August 2006, we mentioned the excellent CD by Sam and the Soul Machine, "Po'k Bones and Rice." Many Neville fans already know about the Soul Machine, but we'll recap the story for those who might not be familiar with it.
The Soul Machine was formed when Art Neville and the Neville Sounds (which featured Art, Aaron and Cyril) was forced to downsize in order to fit the stage at the Ivanhoe, a Bourbon Street club which had just hired the band for a regular gig. Art, George Porter, Jr, Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste and Leo Nocentelli accepted the gig at the Ivanhoe and took the new name, The Meters. Aaron, Cyril and saxophonist Gary Brown (another casualty of the Neville Sounds' downsizing) joined forces with Sam Henry, Bull Dog Bonnie and Richard Amos and formed the Soul Machine (which continued playing the Neville Sounds' old gig at the Nitecap.) In 2002, a long-lost studio recording by the Soul Machine from 1969 (minus Cyril and Aaron) was released by the Funky Delicacies /Tuff City Records label. Despite, the lack of any Neville participation, that disc is well worth tracking down!
Fast-forward 40 years, from that 1969 recording session to now. Ex-Soul Machine members Sam Henry, Gary Brown and Cyril Neville appear together once again on Sam Henry's "Potpourri: Sam Henry and a Gathering of Some Friends" CD. The disc is available at the Louisiana Music Factory; and, like so many other independent releases from the Crescent City, might (unfortunately) never be found at any national retailers.
At this point, we don't have a copy of this new release, so we must rely on information found on the Louisiana Music Factory's web site. Cyril contributes percussion, congas, cowbell, tambourines to an unspecified number of tracks. He shares lead vocals with Dr. John and Gary Brown on the opening track, a medley of "Come Together" and "Gotta Serve Somebody." He also contributes lead vocals to the second track, "New Orleans Cookin'." (Presumably, this is the song he wrote with Allen Toussaint and included on his own "New Orleans Cookin'" CD.)
Of course, if your budget only allows for one new Neville CD right now, stick with Cyril's new "Brand New Blues" CD. If money permits, "Potpourri" will undoubtedly prove to be a worthy addition to any Neville fan's collection as well.
We will provide a full review whenever we are able to add this disc to our own collection.
We weren't able to attend the Fest this year, but the ATT&T Blue Room webcast was the next best thing. Our web stream choked on a few occasions, but (luckily) we only missed a couple seconds of the performance here and there.

We were starting to wonder if the folks at Munck Music / www.jazzfestlive.com were going to be recording this year's JazzFest shows as they have done for the past several years. For those of us who are not able to attend the Fest itself, having a high quality, professional recording of the show is the nest best thing.
After checking their site yesterday (4-27) and finding no mention of the shows being recorded this year, we sent a frantic email to our good friend Denise, who is at the Fest, asking her if she has heard anything regarding the Fest recordings this year. She assured me that the folks at Jazzfestlive are on the job again this year.
After reading her message, we checked the jazzfestlive site again and found that they had added three 2009 shows to their list of available shows.
At this moment, there are 20 shows for sale. So far, Dumpstaphunk's performance is the only Neville-related show on the list, but we're keeping our fingers crossed that there might be others as well.
We admit it. We definitely get a bit impatient when it comes to possiblity of acquiring some new Neville recordings!
Click HERE for the Jazzfestlive.com site. Shows can be purchased on CD or as downloads!
NEW CD FROM ZIG MODELISTE FEATURES VINTAGE LIVE RECORDING (AND IVAN)
Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste, drummer for the original Meters, has just released a new CD, "Funk Me Hard LIVE." The recording was made almost thirty years ago and features Ivan (and several other familiar, Neville-related musicians. See list below.)
One track, which should be of particular interest to fans of Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, is "Standing In Yo Stuff" (which is a staple at Dumpstaphunk gigs.) We here at Nevilletracks were surprised to learn that this song was being played as far back as 1980 and that it was written by Zig!
Our copy should arrive some time next week, at which point, we'll let you know more about it. Until then check out the press release at Zigaboo's web site, which is also available HERE.
According to the Louisiana Music Factory's web site, the performers on this recording include: Zigaboo Modeliste (drums) - Ivan Neville (keys, b-3 organ) - Nick Daniels (bass) - Gerald Tillman (keys) - Teddy Royal (guitar) - Earl Smith (vocals) - Reggie Cummings (vocals) - Melton Cozy (congas) - Nelson Reed (guitar, vocals) and Coco Campbell Rock (TV Personality and Announcer.)

AARON ON NEW GOSPEL COMPILATION
March 31 sees the release of a new Walmart-exclusive Gospel compilation, featuring "A Change Is Gonna Come" (performed by Aaron and the Mt. Zion Mass Choir.)
In the same vein as 1994's "Rhythm, Country and Blues" compilation, which paired great blues and R&B singers (including Aaron) with famous country performers, "Oh Happy Day" pairs pop artists with great gospel choirs.
Click HERE for audio samples and ordering details. (The pre-order price is 50% off the suggested retail price!)
Additional information (and an electronic press kit) can be found HERE.
Thanks to Heather H for alerting us to this release!
VERY RARE COPY OF THE NEVILLES' COOKIE 45 CURRENTLY ON EBAY
Let us preface this by saying that THIS IS NOT AN ENDORSEMENT OF ANY KIND!!! We are not familiar with the seller of this rare 45. Nor can we guarantee its authenticity. We are merely pointing out that, if this is completely legitimate, then it is one of the rarest (and cleanest) copies of this gem we've ever seen.
CLICK HERE to see the auction, which ends on March 29th!
The 45 itself has been selling for $300 or more on a pretty consistent basis, but this copy should sell for significantly more since the company sleeve is even rarer than the disc itself AND is in such good condition.
Nevilletracks did a story about this 45 back in late 2005, after a UK record collector named Andy Jackson made us aware of the company sleeve. Click here to read that story.
Needless to say, we'll be watching to see how much this gem earns for its seller.

A NOTE OF THANKS TO AUTHOR JEFF HANNUSCH
Of all of the single-disc Aaron compilations available, my personal favorite is "Ultimate Collection." Unlike the others, which all focus on a specific time period or record label, "Ultimate Collection" includes tracks from throughout Aaron's career. If I were compiling a "best of" collection, it would be something very much like "Ultimate Collection." So, I feel like I'm in good company, as the disc was produced by noted New Orleans music historian and author, Jeff Hannusch. (He also wrote the excellent liner notes for the collection, of course.)
The reason I mention this now is that I had the honor of speaking with Mr. Hannusch (via email) recently. He very generously helped provide me with some assistance, which is of benefit to Nevilletracks and all of its visitors.
I wanted to thank Jeff publicly for his generosity and, at the same time, remind everyone who visits Nevilletracks to check out Jeff's books, "I Hear You Knockin : The Sound of New Orleans Rhythm and Blues" and "The Soul of New Orleans: A Legacy of Rhythm and Blues." (Click on the book titles for more information or to order them from Amazon.com.)
I've owned a copy of "I Hear You Knockin'" for over 20 years and still refer to it on a fairly regular basis. It's one of my favorite books on the topic of New Orleans R&B and I can't recommend it highly enough to ALL New Orleans music fans! While there is no one chapter dedicated to the Nevilles, there are many pages with useful information about them. "The Soul of New Orleans" was published in 2001 and DOES include a chapter, specifically about the Neville Brothers, although (again) there is a LOT of information throughout the book pertaining to the Brothers! And, like the earlier book, this one is also highly recommended!
Thank you, Mr. Hannusch, for your excellent books AND for your very generous contribution to Nevilletracks!!!
- Jon Tyler
RE-RELEASE OF "BRING IT ON HOME?"
While on our usual web search for any new Neville-related CDs, we found a listing for "Bring It On Home - The Soul Classics," with a release date of February 24, 2009. Our immediate thought was that the 2006 release was being re-released (perhaps with bonus tracks); but, since only one source (CD Universe) lists this disc, it seems likely that the listing is an error.
**************************
Update: As of February 24, the release date had been pushed back to March 3 and the track listing was the same as that on the 2006 version of the CD.)

EXCELLENT ARTICLE ABOUT DUMPSTAPHUNK AT JAMBASE.COM
There is an excellent article about Dumpstaphunk and its current and future plans at Jambase.com and on the band's MySpace page. Here are some excerpts:
Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk will spend the rest of the year (and many more to come) doing what they do best - making music, both on the stage and in the studio. The band … will spend February celebrating Mardi Gras on the road… This first leg of the tour…will culminate with a hometown pre-Mardi Gras show at New Orleans' Howlin' Wolf.
After putting the finishing touches on their first full-length record which will be released later this year, Dumpstaphunk will hit the road again for another month…
The article also lists many tour dates, all of which have been added to the Nevilletracks Tourdates page.
Click HERE for the full article.
The same article can be found on Dumpstaphunk's MySpace page HERE
January 2009
According to "Offbeat Magazine"...
Cyril Neville has been signed by Mark Carpentieri of MC Records, based in New York.
Neville's CD will be released on April 7, and is called Brand New Blues. Cyril wrote or co-wrote most of the songs on the CD. Special guests include Art Neville, Ivan Neville, Waylon Thibodeaux and Tab Benoit. The project was produced by Brian J of Pimps of Joytime, and marks Cyril’s first release since 2000.
Thanks to Audun Berg for the heads up on this news!

According to Satchmo.com, the Neville Brothers will be appearing on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Wednesday, January 28, 2009. Check your local listings for details.
IVAN'S LP WITH RUFUS NOW AVAILABLE VIA DOWNLOAD
Until now, the only ways that the Ivan Neville fan could acquire Rufus's "Seal in Red" LP (from 1983) was to buy a vinyl (or cassette) copy from the used record shop (or to seek out a copy of the hard-to-find Japanese CD.)
We've recently learned that the LP is now available via download at iTunes and Amazon.com. The entire album can be purchased for just under $10; but, for those who are interested in only the songs on which Ivan sings lead vocals, "Take It To The Top," "The Time Is Right," "When I Get Over You," "You, The Night And The Music" and "I'm Saving This Love Song" can be downloaded individually.
Even though we mentioned this DVD back in October 2006, we never picked up a copy for our own archives until recently. (The list price has dropped to $9.99 and Amazon.com is currently selling them for $7.49!)
This once-pricey DVD is now very affordable and should be in the collection of any Neville fan. (Don't let the HDDVD label deter you; the disc is two sided and plays on either a High Definition DVD player OR a standard DVD player!)
Click HERE for more details about this release (and its companion release, the "Make It Funky" documentary.)
"HEART & SOUL OF NEW ORLEANS" AT AMAZON'S MP3 STORE
We've just discovered that the Nevilles' download-only, live EP from April 2008, "The Heart and Soul of New Orleans" (which was previously available exclusively through iTunes) is now available to Rhapsody users and (via download) at Amazon.com
None of the above has the disc available in a lossless format, but Amazon's 256kbps mp3 files will likely sound the best of any of the available versions.
CHARLES AT SNUG HARBOR ON JANUARY 15
The Charles Neville Quartet will be making an appearance at the Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro (626 Frenchmen Street · New Orleans, LA 70116 · 504.949.0696) on January 15, 2009.

"funky METERS at the DuPont Clifford Brown Jazz Festival" (which was sold exclusively by LiveMusicZone in 2005)
While we acknowledge that there are many web sites, which are more visually appealing than NevilleTracks, our goal has always been (and always will be) to present useful information in as timely and as organized a fashion as possible.
As such, we have made a few minor changes to the site, which we hope will make it easier to use. For the time being, the overall appearance of the site will remain relatively unchanged.
At the bottom of this page (and all of the other news pages,) we have added links to older news stories. Keep in mind that many of those stories are very much out-of-date and contain links to pages which no longer exist. The news pages are being archived for historical purposes only.
To make searching for a specific Neville song as easy as possible, it is more efficient to have as few separate discography pages as is possible (even though the larger pages tend to load more slowly, especially on slower internet connections.) For the past few years, we have divided the family discography into two sections (1954-1977 and 1978-now.) Unfortunately, the second page has become excessively large and we have decided to split it into two separate pages (1978-1999 and 2000-now.) We hope that this change will not cause any serious inconvenience for anyone.
Your feedback is always invited!

NO NEW NEVILLE RECORDINGS ON THE HORIZON?
In the 12/19/08 Times-Picayune article mentioned previously, writer Keith Spera wrote that, "Neither (Aaron) Neville nor the Neville Brothers are slated to start recording new albums anytime soon. Instead, they'll continue to tour in 2009." He then quoted Aaron as saying, "It's going to be a running year."
Unfortunately, last year's rumored box set never appeared. We don't know if the project has been shelved or if it is still in the works. We'll let you know if we hear anything.
