A decent
supplement to Rhino's original "Treacherous" compilation.
The disc starts out strong with six songs from Poppa Funk and two
from Aaron's Minit Records sessions. Next up are two of Aaron's Parlo
cuts and one Bell Records cut from 1969. The following cut (from Cyril)
is the most intriguing song on the collection in so far as it is NOT
what it claims to be. Alleged to be the b-side of Cyril's "Gossip"
45, it is (in fact) a Meters outtake, which appears nowhere else.
Closing out the disc are five tracks from the Nevilles' "Uptown"
LP (which was released in 1987, after the release of the original
"Treacherous" collection) and one excellent song from the
"Neville-ization" LP.
In the
All-Music Guide, William Ruhlmann states that the "Uptown"
and "Neville-ization" tracks prevent this disc from achieving
classic status. Keeping in mind that "Uptown" was very difficult
to find on CD at that time, I can understand Rhino's inclusion of
so many tracks from that LP.
Despite
Ruhlmann's comments, the guide rates the disc 4-and-a-half out of
five stars.
